The influence of the bourbon barrel aging provides hints of vanilla and toffee, which marry well with the notes of molasses and dried fruit from the Nicaraguan sugar cane.
In September 1993, an area of low pressure near the Cape Verde Islands off the coast of Western Africa began steadily intensifying. As its trajectory curved northwest, its winds became more severe. Soon the depression was upgraded to a tropical storm, and by the time it made landfall on the Outer Banks of North Carolina on September 18th, now Hurricane Isabel had winds sustaining 165 miles per hour. As the storm ravaged the Carolinas and moved toward New England, it left millions without electricity and the residents of Nantucket stranded on the island. In the wake of the hurricane, the only watering hole that remained open on Nantucket was Triple Eight Distillery, where locals congregated and were rationed a pint of rum each day until boat service was restored to the mainland.
Hurricane Rum was first introduced during the hurricane season of 2003 in honor of Hurricane Isabel and the other awesome storms that wreak havoc from the Keys of Florida to Maine. Made in Nantucket, the rum is is distilled from fermented molasses made from Nicaraguan sugar cane and is overproofed to match the strength of the hurricane season.
After the rum is distilled, Triple Eight Distillery’s master distiller, Randy Hudson, ages the rum in used bourbon casks sourced from the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. The casks are stored in an estate warehouse lacking climate control, allowing Nantucket’s unique island climate to aid in the maturation of the rum. The bourbon barrels provide the rum with a unique flavor profile — hints of vanilla and toffee from the barrels marry well with the notes of molasses and dried fruit from the Nicaraguan sugar cane. Following maturation, Hudson hand selects barrels of three, four and seven year vintages in order to craft Hurricane Rum. After blending the different vintages, the distillers at Triple Eight Distillery fill each bottle by hand.
