Copper-reddish color, along with an aroma of honey, ginger, dried fruits and caramel. Situated just north of the Highland Boundary Fault, the Scottish Highlands is a sparsely populated region of Scotland that is dominated by a series of mountain ranges and rivers dotting its rolling landscape. Due to its vast size and complex geography, the Highlands region enjoys a number of different microclimates.
Virginia Highland Malt Whisky is made from a vatting, or blending, of aged single malt whiskies produced by some of the most prestigious distilleries in the Scottish Highlands. The region is known for producing bold and powerful single malts that are full-bodied, rich and textured, and are often characterized by a touch of smoke and fruit.
Once the single malt whiskies are matured for nearly a decade, they are expertly blended together in Scotland. The whisky is then transported over 3,000 miles to the Virginia Distilling Company in Lovingston, Virginia. In Virginia, Pat Jones-McCray, the distillery’s founder and master blender, finishes the Scotch whisky for several months in French oak casks that were previously used to mature a port-style wine. The French oak casks, which are sourced from a local Virginia winery, impart a copper-reddish hue to the whisky, and contribute sweet notes of cherries, dried fruits and blueberry jam. “We felt we wanted to do something with integrity that reflected the character of Virginia, where we live,” Pat says. “We wanted to add some artisanry to the process.”

“We think of this whisky as born in Scotland and raised in Virginia,” says Pat. While Virginia Highland Malt was designed to appeal to both bourbon and Scotch drinkers, “the whisky is a unique representation of Virginia’s terroir,” Pat adds. “Not Scotland and not Kentucky.”
