Expensive, but I would recommend it for the whiskey enthusiast that has been around the block a few times and is looking an experience they haven't had before, and would be hard pressed to find anywhere else.
Old Potrero 18th Century Style Whiskey is first and foremost a Rye whiskey. It's one hundred percent Rye mashbill places its palate in the realm of Whistlepig or High West, with a few distinguishing aspects.
It utilizes a mash of Malted Rye, which, as far as I know, is unique in all of whiskey.
Up front, this whiskey sets in with the floral, doughy and familier notes I get from my favorite "High Rye" Ryes. Then, all that Malted Rye affects a dark, rich and lingering scotch-like finish on what is only a 2 year old whiskey. Not petty, but malty and fascinating.
The aging is also unique to this whiskey, being aged in not charred, but toasted barrels. This was supposedly the the trend in the 18th century.
All in all this whiskey is expensive, but I would recommend it for the whiskey enthusiast that has been around the block a few times and is looking an experience they haven't had before, and would be hard pressed to find anywhere else.
It would make a great bottle to bring to a tasting party. Great tasting, and a great story to share.
