This peated single malt from Scotland is not from Islay, but from Speyside, home of the Benromach distillery, so you’ll get no maritime or medicinal undertones with this one, but an elegant fruitcake fragrance that finishes in a smoky bonfire.

About Benromach 2009 Peat Smoke 2018 Release Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Speyside in Scotland isn’t exactly famous for its peaty whiskies, but Benromach distillery decided to give it a go: using their own local Scottish barley malted with higher than usual levels of peat, they produced an excellent peated whisky that isn’t your typical Scottish peated. Most peated Scottish whiskies are from Islay, which is known for its marine, almost medicinal flavors. But peat from Speyside is more gentle, providing a flavor palette that matches perfectly with the fruity and warm notes that the area is known for. While the Speyside peat deserves a lot of credit, more praise for this spectacularly balanced single malt should be directed at Benromach distillery. This small gem is making whiskies in a traditional way - using only the best ingredients, two types of yeast to develop more complex flavors, copper pot stills for distillation, and the finest casks where the whiskies can mature to perfection. Benromach Peat Smoke single malt is a small batch whisky that was matured in first-fill bourbon barrels in Benromach’s traditional dungeons before being bottled at an ABV of 46%.

About Benromach
Situated on the outskirts of the ancient Royal Borough of Forres, Benromach Distillery was founded in 1898 by Duncan McCallum, a former distiller at the Glen Nevis Distillery in Campbeltown, and FW Brickman, a former spirits broker from Edinburgh. After just two short years of operation, McCallum and Brickman were forced to close the doors to Benromach Distillery and since then, the distillery has changed hands a number of times. In 1993, malt whisky specialists Gordon & MacPhail acquired the distillery and began refurbishing it. The experts at Gordon & MacPhail took five years to re-equip the distillery with two new stills and secure the water rights to Champelton Springs in Romach Hills. On October 15, 1998, Benromach Distillery was officially reopened by Prince Charles of Wales.
Scotch is the most popular whisky in the world and is considered the king of them all! There are five whisky regions in Scotland (six if you count the not officially recognized Islands), and each of them produces spirits with unique properties and distinct tasting notes. (The type of grain used determents the type of the scotch.)
Malt whisky is made of malted barley, and grain whisky uses other grains like corn or wheat. Most of the time, a whisky is blended from different distilleries hence the name blended scotch, but if a malt whisky is produced in a single distillery, we get something extraordinary called a single malt.
The nose starts with smokiness immediately, followed closely by notes of sweet tar note, leather, smoked meat, and a touch of iodine. The palate is peat up-front, followed by fruit sweetness, butterscotch, lemon sorbet, dried apricots, and cocoa powder. The finish is long and lingering, with strong hints of peat.
