About Cockspur
In the late 19th century, a Danish businessman by the name of Valdemar Hanschell founded a ship chandlery on the island of Barbados. The chandlery, which supplied boats passing through the Lesser Antilles with supplies sucumh as whale oil, rope and fresh food, also produced its own rum for sailors to enjoy while at sea. By the early 20th century, Hanschell's Cockspur Rum — named after Barbados' traditional rooster icon — had become the best selling rum on the island.
Today, over a century after Cockspur Rum was first introduced at Hanschell's ship chandlery, it remains a symbol of national pride and joyfulness for the island of Barbados.
Rum history allegedly started in the Carribiens in the 17th century when they started to ferment and distill molasses, a byproduct of sugar production. Most of the Rum is aged in oak or ex-wine casks, giving its color and flavor.
We distinguish between 4 different Rum categories, where white or unaged rum is mainly used in cocktails, while dark, spiced, and añejo (aged) rum are mostly enjoyed neat.
On the nose, Cockspur Original Fine Rum really impresses with mild and sweet notes of vanilla and wood. The palate is inviting and offers flavors of butter, brown sugar, warm spicy oak, and a little smoke, culminating in a balanced finish with coconut notes.
