About Jose Cuervo

Cuervo has been producing tequila ever since 1795, when Jose María Guadalupe de Cuervo began selling Vino Mezcal de Tequila de Jose Cuervo after receiving the official charter from the King of Spain to produce and distribute tequila commercially. It however all started with Jose María’s father, José Antonio de Cuervo, who, in 1758, was given a writ of land ownership by King Fernand VI to plant agave on his lands. 1800s were an exciting century for Jose Cuervo. In 1812, the La Rojeña distillery was founded. Jose Cuervo’s tequilas are produced at La Rojeña to this day, making it the oldest active distillery in Latin America. The company exported first barrels to California in 1852, and a few decades later Jose Cuervo became the first tequila brand to start selling its product in bottles, making it even easier to transport tequila across the border.

Today, Jose Cuervo is the best-selling brand of tequila and currently controls about a third of the global tequila market. It remains a family owned enterprise, run by the Beckman family, the 11th generation descendants of Don Jose Antonio de Cuervo. Hundreds of agave plants cultivated by José Antonio eventually multiplied to millions of plants, and now Jose Cuervo owns the largest holdings of agave in the world, nestled in rich, volcanic soil at the foot of the Tequila Volcano. Each day, 200 to 300 tons of agave are put in the ovens to cook at La Rojeña. Jose Cuervo makes its tequilas using a combination of traditional and modern methods. It uses a stone oven and also extracts starches with a diffuser, and distills the spirits in pot and column stills. With a variety of production methods and maturation strategies, Jose Cuervo produces a wide range of tequilas of different styles.
