The award-winning Straight Rye Whiskey expression that is at the center of their whiskey lineup is based on a mash bill of 80% NY rye and 20% NY malted barley. After it has been pot-distilled, it's aged for 18 months in new, charred American oak barrels, resulting in plenty of char and spice notes in the 90-proof spirit. It's made to be smoother and more approachable than typical rye whiskeys.

About Five & 20 Spirits
The Five & 20 operation stands on 3 great pillars: versatility, self-sufficiency, and sustainability. Their facility is equally well-suited for distilling, brewing, and blending, producing vodka, gin, whiskey, brandy, as well as various styles of beer. They employ a 500-liter Christian Carl still for their higher-proof and clean spirits, and a 2500-liter Vendome pot still for whiskeys. They grow most of their corn, rye, and oats on their own farm and source the remaining from neighboring ones.
Head Distiller Joe Nelson has been brewing since 2008 and has focused his know-how and passion into distilling and all forms of fermentation. You can visit the Westfield Wonder which includes the Five & 20 Distillery year-round to try out the spirits and beers right at their source, as well as visit the Mazza Chautauqua Wine Cellars with New York wines, or sit down for a farm-fresh seasonal meal at their Bird eatery.
As American as the bald eagle, rye whiskey was first brewed in the American Northeast in the 1600s. Even George Washington distilled it after leaving the Oval Office, so there’s no way of denying its origin. It’s distinguished from bourbon for its original and unique spicy notes.
By law, rye whiskey must be made from at least 51% rye grain, aged in new and charred oak barrels for at least two years, and bottled at no more than 62,5% ABV.
Notes of caramel, vanilla, and oak hit the nose first, then give way to rye spice. The rye spice and sweetness of the oak are well-balanced on the palate and are joined by hints of dried fruit, cranberries, honey, and hops, as well as some cinnamon. Finishes with plenty of rye and a pleasing warmth.
