About Mackmyra First Edition Single Malt Swedish Whisky

Mackmyra First Edition Swedish Single Malt Whisky is distilled from a mash of 100% malted barley harvested from the fields just outside Mackmyra Distillery in Galve, Sweden. After the barley is harvested, Angela D'Orazio, Mackmyra's master distiller, mills and mashes it inside a custom-made, 114-foot tall Gravitation Still. The height of the still allows Mackmyra to harness the laws of gravity for nearly the entire distillation process, which results in fewer pumps and moving parts. As a result, D'Orazio says, milling and mashing becomes "becomes much more climate smart than in a traditional distillery." After milling and mashing the barley, D'Orazio ferments the mash for approximately three days before distilling it twice inside Mackmyra's custom-made, copper-pot stills.

Following distillation, the whisky is aged in handmade, first-fill American bourbon and Swedish oak casks. The Swedish oak — sourced from the island of Visings from oak that was planted 160 years ago and intended for use in building warships for the Swedish navy — is tougher than ordinary oak and has a unique, fiery spiciness. After the casks are filled, they are stored in an abandoned mine fifty meters below ground. The constant low temperature in the abandoned mine results in a more mellow, smooth whisky. After being aged for approximately five years, the whisky is then brought back to the distillery where each bottle is filled and labeled by hand.

Mackmyra First Edition Swedish Single Malt Whisky is Sweden's first single malt whisky, and it earned the Gold Medal at the 2011 International Wine & Spirits Competition and a score of 90 points from Whisky Advocate. Try a bottle of Swedish whisky today!

About Mackmyra

Located 100 miles north of the city of Stockholm (outside the town of Gavle), Mackmyra Distillery is putting Swedish Single Malt Whisky on the map. The distillery, co-founded by eight classmates from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, opened its doors in 2002. "We had a dream to create the first Swedish malt whisky," says Rikard Lundborg, one of the cofounders of Mackmyra Distillery. "We followed our path and developed the whisky from its origin. That path was very slow and incredibly difficult, but it was the right path, because we reached our goal: a Swedish malt whisky with a unique identity."
