About Mezcal de Leyendas Maguey Espadin Oaxaca

Mezcal de Leyendas is focused on bringing artisanal mezcals using rare and unique agaves from different regions within Mexico. Instead of focusing on one particular type, their aim is to use the most prevalent agaves from each region allowing them to guide the consumer across the entire DO of mezcal. These are sourced from diverse regions, highlighting the local terroir as well as showcasing the skills of local Maestros Mezcaleros. Each region ― be it Durango, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Puebla, or San Luis Potosi ― features one master producer of mezcal.

But they do far more than just that. In 2005 they opened the first Mexico City establishment that only sells artisanal mezcal helping spark the boom we see in mezcal today. They organize festivals and work to help the industry grow, educate, and take part in projects that deal with sustainability and fair trade ― both crucial aspects of securing a bright future for the famous Mexican spirits.

Maestro Mezcalero Saul Martinez hails from the valleys of Oaxaca. San Juan del Río is a small Mexican village with a rich history of mezcal production and it's there that Martinez has been practicing the craft for more than 3 decades, extracting the precious juice from estate-grown espadin agaves and distilling the spirit using traditional methods. This includes carefully selecting only the fully-matured 7 to 9-year-old plants and harvesting the piñas (hearts) using a machete. They are then cooked in a conical lava rock pit for 3 days, milled with a horse-drawn stone tahona, and left to ferment in wooden open-air vats for 3 days, before being double distilled in a copper alembic still.

About Mezcal

Mezcal is a distilled spirit made from roasted agave plants between two days and two weeks, which gives it a distinct smokey flavor.
What scotch is for whisk(e)y, mezcal is for tequila.

It can be made from different types of agave in different parts of Mexico, but most of it (60%) comes from the state of Oaxaca. Mezcal offers a large diversity of flavor profiles and ranges between 40 and 55% ABV.
