About Silent Pool

The story of Silent Pool Distillers starts with two friends walking in the local pub. After a few drinks, they start making plans to open a small, local distillery. The year was 2014, and the two friends were Ian McCulloch and James Shelbourne, Surrey locals sharing a passion for craft distilling. Taking their inspiration from Scottish whisky distilleries, the two had a vision of making a truly sustainable distillery next to a fresh water source, producing handcrafted, artisan spirits using locally sourced ingredients. After scouting many locations in the south of England, one day Ian happened upon a group of dilapidated farm buildings on the banks of the legendary Silent Pool lake. After obtaining a permission from the owner, Duke of Northumberland, they restored the farm buildings standing on the Albury Estate, and turned them into the Silent Pool Distillery.

In keeping with the original vision for a sustainable business, a vintage wood-fired steam boiler was restored to power the hand-built copper still, which was created for Silent Pool Distillers by the Arnold Holstein Company from Germany. The bespoke stainless-steel tanking, designed to hold both the spirit and the crystal-clear water, was sourced from the Vipava Valley in Slovenia. The distillers have experimented with hundreds of different flavor combinations over the years to create perfect recipes for their multi-layered gins bursting with complex flavors. In addition to its core range of gins, the distillery, nestled deep in the woodlands of the Surrey Hills, also makes WRY vodka, and a number of small-batch experimental gins, cordials and vodkas.
