About Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Malt Whiskey

A member of the Distiller's Select lineup of whiskeys, Woodford Reserve Malt Whiskey is one of the latest permanent additions. It consists of a mash bill of 51% malted barley, 47% corn, and 2% rye. Aside from the different ratios in the recipe, it gets the same treatment as their bourbons in every other way, including aging in new, charred American oak casks. The percentage of malted barley is relatively low ― 51% being the minimum for this style ― making it surprisingly similar to bourbon and a great entry point into quality malt whiskey done the American way.

About Woodford Reserve

The Woodford Reserve Distillery sits on what was once an old Distillery founded by Elijah and his son, Oscar Pepper, in the 1800s. Years later, under the stewardship of Oscar and Master Distiller James Crow, their distillery reformed and modernized producing whiskey in the United States — the distillery revolutionized the concepts of sour mash and yeast propagation.

Today, the distillery is among Kentucky's oldest and smallest bourbon distilleries. Nestled in the heart of the Commonwealth's thoroughbred country, it's the only place you'll find bourbon and horses maturing side by side. It's also one of a handful of spirits companies in the world to own a cooperage and craft its barrels, allowing for ultimate precision when creating exact toast and char specifications.

About American Whiskey

There are two main representatives of the American whiskey family, bourbon, and rye, but some other spirits don't fall into those two strictly regulated categories.

There's equally strictly regulated American single malt, made from 100% malted barley, Tennessee whiskey, essentially bourbon filtered through maple charcoal and aged in new charred oak barrels.

And then there's moonshine, a high proof (150- 170 proof) distilled spirit mainly made out of corn which gained popularity during the prohibition.

There's plenty of nuts, caramel, and chocolate on the nose, balanced well with sweet, fruity notes of apples, dried fruit, and a whiff of tropical fruit. Some spice is present as well. Dark chocolate, caramel, and toasted nuts are joined by oak, coconut, and pepper on the palate. The extra-long finish retains some of that nuttiness and chocolate notes.
